Another long overdue blog post!

Last week, my friend, Sam, and I set out to climb the world famous Diamond on Longs Peak. These two days were my only scheduled days off this summer, so I figured I would make the most out of them.

The Diamond is the east face of Longs Peak; it starts at 13,000 feet and ens just over 14,000 feet. Seeing as this was our first Diamond trip, we chose to do the "Casual Route." Rated 5.10a, this is the easiest and most popular route on the Diamond.

Our trip went a little something like this:

Day 1:

The Approach:

We arrived at the Longs Peak trail head around 10 AM. We spent about a half hour picking up bivy permits, arranging back packs, and waiting for a parking spot.

We started hiking at 10:30 and took our time hiking up. As we passed some returning climbers, we stopped briefly to chat and to ask about current conditions. When we mentioned our plans to bivy on Broadway Ledge, they responded with, "Oh, that's a nightmare." We were only a half hour in, and our trip was off to an optimistic start. Despite our slow pace, we seemed to pass countless hiking parties on the way up and reached Chasm Lake in good time.
ABOVE: My first glimpse of the Diamond. BELOW: Surprisingly stunning scenery on the hike up.
As we crossed the boulder field, we stopped to fill up water at Chasm Lake. When we tried to sterilize our water, we found out that the battery had died in Sam's SteriPEN. When we tried to replace the battery, the spring loaded battery cap went flying into the lake. Long story short, we were able to track down the cap thanks to the crystal clear high alpine water, and Sam went on a successful (and cold) recovery swim. After our 30 minute water/swim stop, we were back on our way and headed towards the North Chimney.

If you watched the Super Bowl this year (Giants won), you may have watched the halftime show. If so, you undoubtedly saw a curly haired man in a dress (er... toga) bouncing around on a rope. This man was Andy Lewis, also know as Sketchy Andy or Skandy, and what he was doing is called slacklining.

Slacklining is where you stretch a piece of nylon webbing between two points and then walk across it, or in Skandy's case, do back flips and spins. Slacklining is an extremely popular activity for rock climbers when they are taking a break from climbing. Aside from being an entertaining challenge, slacklining requires a great deal of balance and concentration- two skills which happen correlate directly with rock climbing. How the Super Bowl halftime planners ever thought to put slacklining in the Super Bowl is astonishing really, but hey, it sure was cool. Overnight Sketchy Andy has gone from a modest celebrity in the slacklining world to a nationally recognized extreme sports star. Below I've attached a couple videos about Andy Lewis including a piece by ABC and a video explaining how he landed himself the nickname Sketchy Andy.

The first is an ABC piece on Andy Lewis and the Super Bowl halftime show. The second is a Youtube reel that explains the nickname.

A friend and I have decided that we will be entering a film into the Reel Rock Film Competition this year. For those of you who are not familiar with it, it is an annual film tour that showcases some of the best short climbing films. Every year they hold an open film competition where anyone can submit their videos with the hopes of winning cash, gear, or in our case the the pride of proving that we can win such a such a contest. I studied film in college and my friend is currently studying photography and currently owns her own small photography buisness. How can we lose right?! Well that's our thinking at least. Tonight we sat down and put some ideas to paper and what we ended up creating was essentially a chaotic and imaginative jumble of ideas. It's amazing how uncreative you learn you really are when you actually need to be. Maybe this is why I took the First Ascent path rather than film? Either way, tonight was the start of what should be an exciting and adventurous project. Wish us luck! Below is the winning video from two years ago(which I did not make, unfortunately) to give you an idea of what we are aiming to acheive here.

Until next time - John
